In The Missing Bride, Edith (the woman whom the reader first assumes to be the heroine) saves her uncle’s life and plantation; yet, because she refuses to marry who he decides upon, she ends up completely destitute and partially insane. Jacquelina (the true heroine) is allowed to be somewhat mischievous, yet in the end she does marry her intended.
