Eneste lyspunkt er lillesøsteren Lille, som Karin må tage sig af. Mens paranoiaen i byen tager til, og Stasi strammer garnet, står Karin alene tilbage og må finde sin egen vej ud af problemerne. Det er, som om alle ønsker sig væk fra Gittersee, men hvad med hende selv GITTERSEE er en stærk roman om livet i DDR i 70’erne set fra en ung piges synspunkt. En opvækstroman, men også en strømmende, drømmende skildring af tilværelsen i et land splittet mellem drømme og utopi, tvang og kontrol.
