I disse spørgsmål bevægede Linnemanns fortællinger og romaner sig tematisk i spændingsfeltet mellem det lokale og det fælleseuropæiske, som fik en stor plads i hans forfatterskab. I sit senværk kritiserede han velfærdssamfundets og industrialiseringens konsekvenser for individet. Willy-August Linnemann modtog De Gyldne Laurbær i 1959 for "Døden må have en årsag".
