"Hans Excellence" er en progressiv digters eget tankeeksperiment om ytringsfrihed i 1800-tallets Danmark. Bogen er skrevet i og med samtidens sprog og retskrivning. Karl Gjellerup (1857-1919) debuterede i 1878 som forfatter med "En idealist" og vandt i 1917 Nobelprisen i litteratur sammen med Henrik Pontoppidan. Karl Gjellerup skrev romaner og noveller og var ofte kritisk over for kristendommen og de gængse normer. Han var inspireret af Georg Brandes‘ litteraturkritik og blev selv en del af Det moderne gennembrud i dansk litteratur.
