Den amerikanske forfatter James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) er kendt for sine historiske romaner om indfødte amerikanere og nybyggere på den amerikanske prærie. "Den sidste mohikaner" fra 1826 er uden tvivl J.F. Coopers mest berømte værk, hvis hovedperson Natty Bumppo også optræder i andre romaner i hans "Læderstrømpe"-serie.
