"Ippolito" è una tragedia di Euripide, rappresentata per la prima volta ad Atene, alle Grandi Dionisie del 428 a.C., dove vinse il primo premio. Ippolito, figlio di Teseo, re di Atene, e della regina delle Amazzoni, è un giovane che si dedica esclusivamente alla caccia e al culto di Artemide, trascurando completamente tutto ciò che riguarda la vita comunitaria e la sessualità, andando anzi orgoglioso della propria verginità. Per tale motivo Afrodite decide di punirlo suscitando in Fedra (seconda moglie di Teseo e quindi matrigna di Ippolito) una insana passione per il giovane. Euripide (Atene, 485 a.C. – Pella, 407-406 a.C.) fu un drammaturgo greco antico. È considerato, insieme ad Eschilo e Sofocle, uno dei maggiori poeti tragici greci. Traduzione a cura di Ettore Romagnoli Ettore Romagnoli (Roma, 11 giugno 1871 – Roma, 1º maggio 1938) è stato un grecista e letterato italiano.
