The House of Mammon

London businessman John Sairson had bought a lodge some five years ago, after Sir George Lugard, the last of his family, had been found dead in the library, with a revolver in his hand. Some called it suicide. Others suspected murder. Mr. Sairson was not at the Grange very often. He kept up the property, but he did not shoot, or hunt, or play golf. He had a wife and daughters, and there was some talk of a son, but nobody seemed to be quite sure as to that. One thing was certain, however, Mr. Sairson was mixed up in shady business. Was there some connection then, when a handsome stranger came calling, inquiring about a nearby property? Possibly, because as it turned out the man wasn't really a stranger at all. Mr. Sairson's daughter had met him previously in Switzerland and their renewed relationship struck terror in her mother's heart.
