La historia está ambientada en la región de Atacama, durante la conocida como «Edad de Plata», tras el descubrimiento del yacimiento de Chañarcillo, y narra los peligros asociados a la búsqueda de fortuna.<br><br>Rosario Orrego Castañeda (1831-1879) fue una escritora, poeta, editora, periodista y profesora chilena, considerada la primera mujer novelista de Chile. Publicó muchos de sus poemas en la revista «La Semana», bajo el seudónimo de «Una Madre». En 1873 fundó y editó la revista «Valparaíso». Fue la primera mujer en ingresar en la Academia de las Bellas Letras de Santiago.
