Hella S. Haasse (1918) en Willem Nijholt (1934) werden beiden geboren op Java en brachten hun kindertijd door in Nederlands-Indië. Hella vertrok in 1938 naar Nederland om te studeren, Willem maakte als kleine jongen in Indië de oorlog mee. Hij belandde in een Japans interneringskamp en kwam pas in december 1945 vrij. Hun leven lang delen zij de liefde voor hun geboorteland met elkaar. In 2004 begon Willem Nijholt zijn herinneringen op te schrijven. Hij schrijft over het paradijselijke Indië en zijn aangrijpende kampervaringen, over zijn liefde voor het toneel en het omgaan met een ernstige ziekte. In de meeslepende verhalen die hij Hella S. Haasse vertelt, bewondert hij en maakt hij zich boos beide met bonzend hart. 'Uit Willem Nijholts brieven blijkt zijn plezier in het onder woorden brengen van alles wat hem bezighoudt.
