Romanen retter en stærk kritik mod brandesianismen og naturalismens gudløshed, men er også en kritik af grundtvigianerne, fordi de negligerer natursiden af menneskets åndelige forståelse. Jakob Knudsen (1858-1917) var en dansk præst, digter og forfatter. Jakob Knudsen har skrevet en række romaner og står endvidere bag salmerne "Se, nu stiger solen" og "Tunge, mørke natteskyer".
