Berättelsen om Del Jordan, som växer upp på landsbygden i Ontario på 1940-talet, är en fiktiv självbiografi om författarens resa in i vuxenlivet. Del bor på sin fars gård, där hon mest umgås mest med sin yngre bror och en excentrisk ungkarl, vän till familjen. När hon börjar tillbringa mer tid i staden omger hon sig för första gången med kvinnor: sin mamma mor, moderns hyresvärd och sin bästa vän Naomi. Genom dessa kvinnor och i sina egna möten med sex, moderskapet och döden, utforskar Del de mörka och ljusa sidorna av kvinnligheten. Alice Munro, född 1931, tilldelades 2013 års Nobelpris i litteratur, med motiveringen den samtida novellkonstens mästare.
