När Stendhals "Rött och svart" kom ut i Paris 1830 stod det genast klart för kritikerna att den representerade något nytt i litteraturen. Boken var baserad på den drygt fyrtioårige författarens livserfarenheter och den var på samma gång en klar redogörelse för ett samtida rättsfall. Huvudpersonen, prästen Julien Sorel, brukar liknas vid författaren själv; det är en äregirig, rationell men känslig cyniker med mindervärdeskomplex som utnyttjar människor för att göra karriär. Titeln anspelar bland annat på motsättningen mellan monarkins makt (de röda uniformerna) och prästernas (de svarta kåporna).
