"Sankt Markus nat" er en slægtsroman, der følger en mor og hendes datter, Mette, der bliver født på netop Sankt Markus nat i året 1533. Epoken kendes som en af de mest dramatiske i historien, og Mette vokser op i en tid præget af overtro, heksejagt og angsten for det onde.<br><br>Helle Stangerup (1939-2015) var en dansk forfatter, der særligt var kendt og hædret for sine romaner og noveller. Stangerup blev cand.jur. i 1966 og fik sin litterære debut i 1967 med krimiromanen "Gravskrift for Rødhætte". Året efter fik hun sit litterære gennembrud med værket "De gule handsker". I løbet af sin karriere modtog hun adskillige priser, heriblandt De Gyldne Laurbær i 1985 og Thit Jensens forfatterlegat i 1990. Udover sine skønlitterære værker udgav Stangerup flere faglitterære værker om historikeren Saxo.
