Efter drottningens plötsliga bortgång tar kungen Gunilla till sin hustru. Som ung drottning är hon hatad av många, men vägrar låta hovets intriger tära på henne och vänder sig i stället till sin make. Hennes inflytande i riket blir stort och med Gunilla som drottning förändras Sverige för alltid. Anna Sparre föddes år 1906 och dog år 1993. Hon var en svensk författare som debuterade år 1943 med "N:o 14 Sparv anmäler sig". Främst skrev hon historiska och självbiografiska romaner. Hennes sista bok "Drottningens förtrogna" gavs ut året efter hennes död.
