Hij woonde lange tijd in Frankrijk en Duitsland, en heeft een divers en kosmopolitisch oeuvre achtergelaten, van een zwarte komedie over seksualiteit in Nazi-Duitsland, over literaire essays, tot maatschappij-kritisch theater. In 2007 kreeg hij de Augustprijs voor zijn roman "Tijdens de nacht".
