Født ind i en velhavende familie begyndte Tolstoj at studere jura og orientalske sprog i 1847, men færdiggjorde aldrig disse studier. I 1851 lod han sig hverve til militæret og gjorde tjeneste i Kaukasus, før han i 1852 fik sin litterære debut med værket "Barndom". I årene efter fulgte værkerne "Drengeår" (1854) og "Ungdom" (1857). Men det var først flere år senere, at Tolstoj udgav de værker, som han er mest kendt for i dag; henholdsvis "Krig og Fred" (1865-69) og "Anna Karenina" (1873-77).
