Efter debutframgången med Ormen blev Stig Dagerman författare på heltid. Sommaren 1946 satt han och skrev på en uppföljare ute på strindbergska Kymmendö. De dömdas ö är berättelsen om sju skeppsbrutna som går under på en obebodd ö, full av vämjeliga djur och skrämmande natur. Ämnet för romanen är skräcken. Språket var inspirerat av Faulkner, symboliken av Kafka. Romanens sista sextio sidor skrev Dagerman över en natt i ett inspiratoriskt rus. De dömdas ö blev det märkligaste han skrivit därför att han inte tänkte när han skrev utan "lät Gud göra det". Erik Lindegrens recension - "denna det fyrtiotalistiska problemkomplexets flygande fästning" - etablerade Stig Dagerman som sin generations starkast lysande stjärna.
