Als Dawoed, een Perzische journalist die al meer dan tien jaar in Amsterdam woont, door Zuid-Afrika reist, wordt hij getroffen door de schoonheid van dat land. Hij ontmoet veel mensen. Maar Dawoed vindt dat hij deze reis niet verdient. Waar hij ook naartoe gaat, telkens moet hij denken aan vijf vrienden van vroeger van wie er inmiddels drie geëxecuteerd zijn en twee na lange gevangenisstraf zijn vrijgelaten. Hij voelt hun aanwezigheid overal. Net als vroeger vertelt Dawoed hun elke nacht een deel van zijn belevenissen om de vrienden de gelegenheid te geven de reis mee te maken. Attar is een van de vijf vrienden. Na afloop van de reis probeert hij de belevenissen op een eigen wijze aan het papier toe te vertrouwen. Hij verweeft oude Perzische reisverhalen met portretten van mensen en gebeurtenissen in Zuid-Afrika en maakt zo een oude droom waar.
