"Den gule krønike" er en kulturmyte, der genopstår af 1. verdenskrigs kaos og den desillusion, der fulgte, og den står som en ener i Knud Hjortøs ellers religionsneutrale forfatterskab.<br><br>Den danske forfatter Knud Hjortø (1869-1931) blev født ind i en bondeslægt, men begyndte tidligt at dyrke sin interesse for kultur og litteratur. Han studerede filologi, boede et par år i Paris og blev senere lærer på seminariet i Vordingborg. Han debuterede som forfatter med bogen "Syner" i 1899, som fulgtes op af en lang række romaner og novellesamlinger. Selvom Knud Hjortø ikke opnåede stor berømmelse på sin egen tid, er hans bøger senere blev bredt anerkendt for deres udprægede originalitet og spændende menneskeskildringer.
