Englændernes bombardement af København i 1807 blev den første i en lang række begivenheder, der kom til at ryste Danmark i dets grundvold. I 1813 gik staten bankerot, året efter måtte Frederik 6. afstå Norge, og hele vejen igennem voksede stænderforsamlingernes modstand mod enevælden. Rundt omkring i Europa vendte den ene revolution efter den anden op og ned på samfundsordenen, og alt dette mærkedes også i Danmark. Claus Bjørn fortæller, hvordan alle disse dramatiske begivenheder til sidst førte til indførelse af Grundloven i Danmark i 1849.<br><br>Claus Bjørn (f. 1944) er uddannet mag.art. i historie og blev i 1971 ansat ved Historisk Institut ved Københavns Universitet som lektor i landbohistorie. Han har udgivet et væld af bøger om dansk landbohistorie, landboreformerne og landbrugets andelsbevægelse. Claus Bjørn har desuden været redaktør på tidsskriftet "Fortid og Nutid" og næstformand i Landbohistorisk Selskab.
