Hans Egede var en norsk präst som bad kung Fredrik IV av Danmark om lov att få åka till Grönland och missionera. Han trodde att det skulle finnas ättlingar till vikingar där men träffade istället inuiter när han landsteg 1721. Han bodde tillsammans med ursprungsbefolkningen mellan åren 1721-1735 och lärde sig deras språk och vann deras förtroende. Även om hans mål primärt var att missionera påtvingade han aldrig befolkningen sin religion. Fram till 1900-talets mitt är Egede fortfarande den stora portalfiguren för Grönlandsforskningens historia. Med stöd av bland annat Egedes dagboksanteckningar har Sven Wikberg tecknat ett fint porträtt av den norske missionären. Sven Wikberg (1890-1959) var en svensk författare och översättare som skrev flera historiska biografier och ungdomsböcker under sin levnadstid. Wikberg var även en skicklig översättare.
