År 1878 inledde svensken Adolf Nordenskiöld en expedition för att utforska Nordostpassagen. I mitten av juli avgick skeppet "Vega" från Tromsö i Norge och två veckor senare nådde den trettio man starka besättningen Berings sund. Väl där överraskades expeditionen av dimma och packis varpå skeppet fastnade och besättningen strandades. I Sverige och ute i världen hade man ingen aning om vad som hade hänt, men man började ana oråd. Hjälpexpeditioner började planeras och i Amerika avseglade "Jeannette" med ishavskännaren kapten De Long för att undsätta "Vega". Det dröjde dock inte länge förrän även "Jeannette" fastnade i packisen och började slitas i stycken. Snart var även hjälpexpeditionen i polarhavets våld … Sven Wikberg (1890-1959) var en svensk författare och översättare som skrev flera historiska biografier och ungdomsböcker under sin levnadstid. Wikberg var även en skicklig översättare.
