Hans fortællinger kredser om emner som identitet og tid, og de udspiller sig i vidt forskellige scener – fra 1400-tallets Romsland over det moderne Europa til en fjern fremtid. Eiler Jørgensen var i mange år engageret i Dansk Forfatterforening og virkede som næstformand i 1970'erne. Han var desuden meget berejst og arbejdede i perioder for forskellige humanitære organisationer.
