Tolstojs lille mesterværk bliver fortalt som næsten én lang rasende monolog om sex, ægteskab, dobbeltmoral og afholdenhed. Da romanen udkom i 1889, vakte den stor debat og blev censureret af de russiske myndigheder på grund af dens kritik af samtidens seksualmoral. Tolstoj skrev derfor et efterskrift til bogens anden udgave, der udkom i 1890. I det forklarer han sin intention med romanen. Både romanen og efterskriftet er nyoversat af Marie Tetzlaff.
