Venäjän keisarikunta pyrki venäläistämään vähemmistökansojaan 1900-luvun alussa. Venäjän toimet aiheuttivat Suomessa voimakkaita vastareaktioita. Vuonna 1905 Venäjän keisarikunnan valtasi suurlakko, joka johtui erityisesti Venäjän tappiosta Venäjän ja Japanin välillä käydyssä sodassa. Suomessa lakon syynä oli kuitenkin myös suomalaisten tyytymättömyys ruhtinaskuntaa vastaan. Johan Kockin "Seitsemän päivää keskusasemalla" on kirjailijan omakohtainen ja vahva kuvaus suurlakon tapahtumista Helsingissä. Johan Kock (1861–1915) oli Venäjän armeijasta eronnut kapteeni ja vallankumouksellinen aktivisti. Hän johti suurlakossa lähinnä työläisistä koostunutta kansalliskaartia. Kock osallistui myös vuoden 1906 Viaporin kapinaan, jonka epäonnistuttua hän pakeni Yhdysvaltoihin. Kock kuoli Yhdysvalloissa vuonna 1915.
