Sekonden är P O Enquists första roman efter det stora genombrottet med Legionärerna 1968. Den handlar till största delen om idrott och fusk, men lika mycket om politik och falska liv. <br><br>Huvudpersonen i boken, själva sekonden alltså, är son till en släggkastare som gjorde skandal på 40-talet när han avslöjades med att ha slagit svenskt rekord med för lätt slägga. Sonen håller nu på med en levnadsteckning över fadern vilket för honom på en smula krokiga vägar till DDR i början av 70-talet, just innan den östtyska idrottsexplosionen skulle äga rum, en explosion som till stor del byggde just på fusk i form av dopning, fast det förstod man först senare. Sist, men verkligen inte minst, är detta den första roman där Enquist använder sig av sina egna, mycket personliga erfarenheter från barndomen i Hjoggböle.
