Båda vill ha fred men tvingas in i ödesdigra konflikter av Gunnars intriganta hustru Hallgerd och andra olycksfåglar i släkten. Dråp följs av hämnd, katastrofer förebådas i onda drömmar, och någon slutgiltig försoning är inte möjlig förrän de hedniska tänkesätten övervunnits.<br><br> Lars Lönnroths översättning bygger på hans egen nytolkning av sagan, ursprungligen presenterad i boken Njals Saga.
