Of is hij wel degelijk meester van de situatie en probeert hij te ontsnappen aan zijn baan, aan zijn huwelijk, aan zichzelf?<br>Bernlef laat het, vanzelfsprekend, in het midden: zijn personages zoeken, en dat zoeken is in deze verhalenbundel een doel op zichzelf.
