"Ylhäiset ja alhaiset" on Karl Jacob Gummeruksen vuonna 1870 julkaistu romaani, joka käsittelee toivoa ja luokkanousua. Teos julkaistiin alun perin jatkokertomuksena Suometar-lehdessä. Karl Jacob Gummerus (1840–1898) oli suomalainen kustantaja, kirjailija ja lyseon lehtori. Hän syntyi Kokkolassa, kävi lukion Vaasassa ja muutti Helsinkiin opiskelemaan yliopistossa. Gummerus perusti kustantamo K.J. Gummerus Oy:n vuonna 1872. Hänen romaaninsa "Ylhäiset ja alhaiset" oli ensimmäinen Gummeruksen kustantama kirja ja myös ensimmäisiä suomeksi kirjoitettuja romaaneja. Gummerus toimitti myös aikakauslehtiä.
