Efter att hans första roman publicerades 1926 flyttade han till Hollywood för att bli manusförfattare. Där utforskade han sin homosexualitet - och gifte sig. Både äktenskapet och manuskarriären blev dock kortvariga. Woolrich återvände till New York, där han bodde med sin mamma i en rad sjaskiga hotellrum, trots att han snart hade gott om pengar. Fram till sin död producerade han en enorm mängd spännings- och skräckhistorier, under en rad pseudonymer. De klassiska filmatiseringarna av Alfred Hitchcock och François Truffaut, och inte minst hans roman Natten har tusen ögon [1945], har fått Woolrich att beskrivas som »1900-talets Edgar Allen Poe« och »noir-genrens fader«.
