Tisdagen den 23 september 2008 kontaktade en kvinna polisen i Umeå. Hon letade efter sin son Fredrik, som hon inte lyckats att komma i kontakt med den senaste tiden. Fredrik hade svåra missbruksproblem och umgicks i fel kretsar, och hans mamma började bli mycket orolig för sin son. Efter gediget polisarbete lyckades man till slut hitta Fredrik, men han var inte längre vid liv. Han hade blivit misshandlad, torterad och förd till en grusgrop, där gärningsmännen hade satt eld på honom. Tidningarna gav fallet namnet "Grusgropsmordet". Vissa namn är fingerade.
