Kansa on yhtenäistettävä. Marsalkka elää ylhäisessä yksinäisyydessä, suomalaiset perheet nuolevat haavojaan. Alun perin vuonna 1961 ilmestynyt romaani on jatkoa teokselle Mummoni ja Mannerheim. Se seuraa Mannerheimin ja Rintalan isoäidin liikkeitä aina talvisodan viimeisiin vuosiin saakka. Paavo Rintala (1930–1999) oli suomalainen kirjailija. Hän kirjoitti näytelmiä, kuunnelmia ja kaunokirjallisia romaaneja. Uransa aikana hän sai kirjallisuuden valtionpalkinnon useina vuosina. Hänet palkittiin myös Runeberg-palkinnolla vuonna 1994.
