I vargtimmen skulle kunna ställas vid sidan av min föregående bok, Minnena ljuger. Där prövade jag mina minnesbilder i syfte att visa hur vårt medvetande förvandlar sådana bilder till de myter vi behöver i vår fortsatta tillvaro. Nu gäller det en motsvarande rannsakan av de sanningar eller myter man låtit forma sitt liv. Flera personer, framför allt min mor och min far, kommer också tillbaka ur sitt skuggrike för att gå till rätta med de bilder jag gett av dem i mina minnen. Det rör sig om anteckningar från min gamla gotlandsgård Petsarve, en prövning i vargtimmens obevekliga ljus av de bärande tankarna i min tillvaro, både den nuvarande och den som passerat. Men också bygdens liv tränger sig på. Styckena interfolieras av dikter där förlorade röster kommer till tals, på samma sätt som i min samling Vintergata. Kjell Espmark
