Suomen ensimmäinen presidentti Kaarlo Juho Stahlberg (1865-1952) eli erikoisen elämän keskellä Suomen suuria mullistuksia. Suomen itsenäistyttyä hän voitti Mannerheimin presidentinvaalissa. Syksyllä 1930 hän joutui lapuanliikkeen muiluttamaksi vaimonsa, kirjailija Ester Ståhlbergin kanssa. Ester arvioi kaappausta teräväkielisesti ja tuki miestään järkähtämättä.<br>Vetävästi kirjoitettu teos kuvaa Ståhlbergin merkitystä suomalaisen oikeusvaltion ja parlamentarismin rakentajana. Kirja esittelee omaperäisen ajattelijan, jonka teesejä olivat kansanvaltaisuus, vapaamielisyys, yleinen ja yhtäläinen äänioikeus sekä sosiaaliset uudistukset. Ståhlberg oli ensimmäisiä kansalaistottelemattomuuden ideaa kokeilleita, joka uskalsi tehdä urallaan monia näkyviä irtiottoja vallitsevasta ajattelusta.
