Huib Bosschaard is in 1914 als zesjarig jongetje met zijn moeder Hanne naar Nederland gevlucht. Zijn kleine zusje is omgekomen bij een bombardement en zijn vader sneuvelt vlak daarna aan het front bij Diksmuide in de Westhoek van Vlaanderen. <br> Huib en zijn moeder komen terecht in Twente en moeder Hanne hertrouwt met `Ollander  Egbert Maatman. Als Huib in de jaren dertig als gevolg van de crisis wordt ontslagen bij de textielfabriek, gaat hij terug naar zijn geboortestreek Vlaanderen. Zijn moeder is daarop tegen. Eenmaal in Vlaanderen doet Huib ontdekkingen die zijn leven voorgoed veranderen.
