Leo Tolstoi (1828-1910) oli maineikas venäläinen kirjailija. Hänen tunnetuimpia teoksiaan ovat Sota ja rauha sekä Anna Karenina. Tolstoi oli huomattava yhteiskunnallinen ja uskonnollinen ajattelija. Hän opiskeli yliopistossa itämaisia kieliä ja oli muutenkin kielellisesti hyvin lahjakas – hän puhui venäjän lisäksi ranskaa, kreikkaa, italiaa, englantia ja saksaa. Kirjoittamisen lisäksi Tolstoille tärkeää oli köyhien auttaminen.
