Die Titelerzählung handelt von einem jungen Gefangenen, der beim täglichen Hofgang eine Hundeblume auf dem Gefängnishof entdeckt. In seinem tristen Alltag wird die Blume zum Objekt seiner Sehnsucht und Begierde. Borchert verarbeitete in der Geschichte autobiografische Erinnerungen an seine eigene Inhaftierung in einem Militärgefängnis zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus.
