Thanks to his vagabond lifestyle: he was a newsboy, a clandestine oyster fisherman, a washerman, a seal hunter, a war correspondent (Russo-Japanese war), an insurance agent, a boxer, a farmer and the gold digger, before realizing himself, after countless attempts, as a successful writer.
