The time is limited, the distance measurable, but the number of suspects and potential murder victims seems endless. Welcome to Stockholm Marathon! Over the years the marathon has managed to avoid any fatalities, but now when the starting gun goes off for the 35th time everything is turned upside down. It’s the first of June but colder than on Christmas Eve and pouring rain. Soon after the race starts a runner collapses and is taken to a first-aid tent, but the man’s life can’t be saved. Detective Inspector Emma Sköld is off that day and on the scene to cheer on her sister Josefin, who is running the marathon. When Emma passes Rålambshovsparken a lifeless woman has just been found and Emma steps in. There is no doubt that the woman has been killed. Is one of the runners a murderer? And if so, when will the next victim appear?
