She attends the Field Lane Ragged School. Her desire is to become a schoolteacher. Industrious, Pennie studies, passes the exam, earning her certificate as Novice Teacher. Later, a mysterious man at the Smithfield Market makes her an offer that she can hardly refuse – to immigrate to America.
