In an attempt to escape the ghosts of past cases, former detective Matt Buchanan has taken a job as a community policeman in the small South Island town of Haast.

Then Matt's retired predecessor is found murdered near the Haast River. The retired officer was re-investigating a murder-suicide from 1978. And after a local man commits suicide, Matt begins to link the old unsolved case with the murder of his retired friend.

Things only become more interesting when a journalist also begins investigating the recent murder and teams up with Matt. Their joint investigation leads them to an underbelly of current and former gang members and former police informants. As the bodies pile up, Matt suspects there's a darker truth lurking out there ...
