In ‘Het torentje van Adelheid’ bezoekt Johan Rudolf Thorbecke de weduwe gravin Henriëtte Solger in Dresden. Haar dan vierjarige dochtertje Adelheid wordt door hem voorgelezen en roept: ‘Later trouw ik met de professor en word ik koningin van Nederland.’ In 1831 bezoekt Thorbecke de familie opnieuw en wordt hij, tot teleurstelling van moeder Henriëtte, verliefd op de negentienjaar jongere dochter Adelheid. Het wordt Thorbecke niet gemakkelijk gemaakt. De toeziend voogden laten haar niet zomaar los. Na twee jaar wachten trouwen zij en leven een gelukkig leven waarbij Adelheid zeer geïnteresseerd is in zijn politieke carrière. Toch kent hun leven samen ook pikzwarte momenten en moeten zij vechten om die te boven te komen.
