Hän kirjoitti ylioppilaaksi 1895 ja sai hospitanttitodistuksen Jyväskylän seminaarista vuonna 1900. Swan kirjoitti useita lasten- ja nuortenkirjoja, toimitti lapsille tarkoitettuja lehtiä ja toimi suomentajana. Anni Swanin mukaan on nimetty nuortenkirjalle myönnettävä palkinto, Anni Swan -mitali.
