Es conocido por ser, junto con Antonio Neumane, el autor de la letra del himno nacional de Ecuador. También fue uno de los fundadores de la Academia Ecuatoriana de la Lengua y miembro de la Real Academia Española. Su novela «Cumandá» es considerada precursora de la novela ecuatoriana.
