The fantastic 1869 novel by Louisa May Alcott (the author of Little Women) follows the story of country girl Polly Milton who goes to visit her wealthy friend Fanny Shaw in the city and finds herself both overwhelmed by the city folks' fashionable lifestyle, as well as embarrassed of her own manners and clothes.
