Desde cedo, conviveu com o preconceito, porque a união de seus país era vista como um escândalo, pois sua mãe era separada e se casara novamente com seu pai. Em 1876, foi para o Rio de Janeiro estudar Belas Artes devido a seu talento com o desenho. Foi cartunista de alguns jornais e revistas durante sua estadia no Rio de Janeiro. Após a morte do pai em 1879, voltou ao Maranhão e deu início a sua carreira literária. Em 1880 fez sua primeira publicação Uma lágrima de mulher. Faleceu em 21 de janeiro de 1913 em Buenos Aires. Suas obras transitaram entre romances exagerados e comerciais e uma literatura mais elaborada, em que denunciava a estrutura social brasileira.
