Nielsen fik sin litterære debut med bogen "Gry. Historien om et pindsvin", som udkom i 1970. Herefter udgav han både børnebøger såvel som krimier. Blandt andet modtog han Poe-klubbens Berenicepris for årets bedste krimi for bogen "Nitten røde roser" (1973). Nielsens kriminalromaner var kendt for deres realistiske islæt, som havde rod i Nielsens arbejde inden for politiet i mere end to årtier.
