"Fra ilden i asken" er en roman om, hvordan livet tager sig ud for en række mennesker i efterkrigstidens Berlin. Carl Bang (1928-1998) var en dansk forfatter og digter. Han blev født i Aabenraa og voksede op i Viborg. Som 18-årig debuterede han med digtsamlingen "Vandfald og vindeltrapper". Carl Bang kastede sig efterfølgende over prosaen og skrev både romaner og noveller. Hans engagement i politik og samfund præger en del af hans forfatterskab, hvor særligt forholdet mellem socialklasserne er et genkommende tema. Carl Bang modtog i løbet af sin karriere en lang række anerkendelser. Her kan blandt andet nævnes Statens kunstfonds livsvarige ydelse i 1981, Henrik Pontoppidans Mindefonds Legat i 1986 og Herman Bangs Mindelegat i 1992.
