Niels Aage Barfoeds biografiske roman fortæller den spændende historie om en af dansk litteraturs vigtigste skikkelser. Johannes Ewald (1743-1781) levede et kort, men dramatisk liv og kæmpede blandt andet i Syvårskrigen. Han anses for at være den første moderne danske digter, da han skrev mange af sine værker ud fra et personligt udgangspunkt. Blandt andet fremstår de selvbiografiske skrifter "Levnet og meninger" og "Herr Panthakaks historie" som nogle af de første af deres type i dansk litteratur, men han er også kendt for sin hyldest til Christian IX med sangen "Kong Christian stod ved højen mast".<br><br>Niels Aage Barfoed (1899-1973) var en dansk præst og forfatter, der skrev en lang række biografiske romaner om historiske danskere heriblandt Poul Henningsen, Leonora Christina Ulfeldt, biskop Hans Adolph Brorson og Steen Steensen Blicher. Niels Aage Barfoed stod desuden bag flere noveller og romaner.
