Han udgav blandt andet romanen "Svenskerne på Kronborg" i 1867 efter et ophold i Helsingør og vandt ligeledes stor anerkendelse for sine sociale romaner. H.F. Ewald er far til forfatterne Theodor og Carl Ewald.
